Can I Borrow Cup of Sugar?

Before I even made the trek home to Delaware, my mother was making me a to-do list for my visit. I got this e-mail from her two days before I left....

***************************************************************

FYI----------- 1. DE is now a no hand held phones while driving state.  They don't need any other reason to pull you over, and tickets run over $100, so BE CAREFUL !!!!!

                  2. We're invited to a cookout at Winnie and Mary's on Sunday evening.  I'm doing deviled eggs, of course, and you're  making the pretzel salad.  Hope that's OK with you.

See you soon!!

***************************************************************

I love my Mom. It's her recipe, but somehow being the family Pretzel Salad chef has become my trademark. Lucky for her I enjoy doing it.

I had the same job last summer when I was home, although we ran into some snags last time. First off, the cookbook she had the recipe in was missing a step. It didn't say to put any sugar in with the crushed pretzels and butter, so when I baked the crust, it didn't harden. Luckily I noticed it in time to make a second attempt. But then we realized the bigger problem -- there was no sugar in the house.

While this may seem strange to a lot of people, it actually makes a lot of sense since my Mom is diabetic and doesn't bake that much. I was grabbing my keys to head out to the store when she said, "Just go next door and ask Sue (her neighbor) if you can borrow some sugar."

I don't know about you, but the last time I saw anyone pop next door to borrow a cup of a sugar, I'm pretty sure I was watching a "Leave It To Beaver" or "I Love Lucy" show. Who borrows food from their neighbor any more? But then I reminded myself it's one of the great things about small town life -- people still actually know each other well enough to do things like that.

Sue is a lovely woman, but sadly also equipped with a pantry devoid of sugar. So it was my sister-in-law to the rescue, and the baking continued.

Fast forward to this visit, and the first thing I asked Mom when I arrived was whether she had sugar. This time, she did, which was actually kind of sad, because I didn't have an excuse to bug Sue. Luckily she dropped by and I got to say hello, even if I was without a measuring cup in hand.

What's The Big Deal About A Little Thing Like Hair?

A friend of mine was complaining the other day about hearing the news that her hair stylist was moving, and how worried she was about finding someone new to manage her head.  I can totally relate.  Having moved more than a few times in my life, finding a good stylist is always a source of anxiety for me.   Luckily I haven't been in that boat for twelve years, and I can't even handle the thought of having to do it again, although I know the day will come at some point.

So why is hair such a big deal?  It's only hair, right?  I think most people obsess about their hair because it's the one thing we're given genetically that we can change easily if we don't love it.    Changing your eye color means wearing contacts.   Making your lips fuller requires collagen injections.   Modifying your cheekbones, your nose or something more substantial means full blown cosmetic surgery.  By contrast, hair is simple, and you can change it as often as you want with few harsh side effects and no long term commitment.  With your hair, you're in control -- at least relatively speaking.

I've been battling for control of my hair my entire life, and it's not a one person job.  It takes incredible amounts of time, numerous hair products, and a large chunk of my discretionary income.  Patience and stamina are also paramount.   My current hair dresser jokes that doing a blow-out for me is her best aerobic workout, since it takes close to an hour.  She should probably be sainted for dealing with my head all these years.

You see, my hair has a mind of it's own.  I've got a ton of it, and it's naturally curly, which equals unruly most of the time. Always has been, always will be.

Take second grade, for instance.

My mother spent all morning wetting my hair down and spraying it into place so it would look nice for my school picture.  During my walk to school on a windy day, it took flight and went it's curly way.  If I remember correctly, she cried when the photo proofs arrived.

Then there were my early teenage years.

As if simply BEING a teenager isn't awkward enough, I had to do it when the Mullet was in style.  I looked back through my high school yearbook the other day, and half the girls in my class had some version of this hair cut.  The only reason I'm smiling in this picture is because I had just gotten my braces off.

By my senior year of high school, the Mullet was gone.

That's about the only good thing I have to say about this look.  If it wasn't for the pearls, I'm pretty sure I could be mistaken for a really cute boy.

For most of my college years, my hair looked like this.

Kind of a longer, softer version of the high school cut -- short on the sides so my hair kept out of my face, but long in the back where it mattered.  My hair product of choice in those days was Aussie Sprunch spray.  Ah, that magical purple bottle!  It was sticky as hell, but my hair didn't move.

Then I graduated from college and moved out on my own.  My first major move away from college took me to Virginia Beach, Virginia -- home of sun, fun and cute Navy guys.  I lived four blocks from the ocean and my apartment complex had an Olympic size pool, two perfect venues to change up my look and try out a fine little product called Sun-In!

The look I was going for was sun-streaked highlights.  The look I got was orange hair.  I thought I was a babe, and the Navy guys didn't seem to care, so I didn't care either.  Until I went to my first legitimate hair dresser and she explained how much that crap was damaging my hair.  She said if I wanted to lighten my hair, foils were the way to go.  Despite my concerns about the expense of going with "real" hair color, my vanity got the best of me and I started going blonde.  In the process, I experienced a religious hair experience in the form of my first blow-out.

The girl who had never known anything but curls finally went straight!  That is, at least for a few days until I had to wash my hair.  I had dreamed and wished for straight hair my whole life, and now I knew I could have it whenever I wanted!  Praise be to the God that invented the blow dryer an flat iron!

I kept variations on the same basic color and style for years, until I moved to California.  In the process, more and more foils got added to the mix until I was finally a full blown, all over BLONDE!

Then one day, I decided I was tired of my bangs and decided to grow them out.  I don't think I've ever been more frustrated with my hair in my life.  It's always resisted anything that smacked of "training," so convincing it to lay the right way took every bit of patience I had.  And by the time the bangs and finally grown out, my hair was damaged from too many years of 40-volume peroxide stripping the color out to make it blonde.

So we chopped it shorter and did kind of a bob thing.

At the time I liked it.  Looking back at this picture, I don't know what I was thinking.   The color, the length, it just all seemed wrong.  Being a blonde was fun for a while, but I started looking washed out, and no matter what we did, the damage just didn't go away in a few spots.

So I decided my days as a blonde were done, and I've been much happier since.

This is redder than my natural color, it's the longest it's ever been in my life, and I feel the most like "me" that I ever have in my life.  It's taken a long time to get here, and the battles have been many, but I feel like I've finally won the war with my hair.

Then again, maybe we've just reached a truce.

Think YOU Had a Bad Day?

I've had my share of bad work days. We all have. But when you see something like this, it really helps you realize maybe what you're struggling with isn't all THAT bad.

Imagine having to call your boss and explain this.

  • You damaged the company vehicle.
  • You damaged other property.
  • You caused the police to come redirect traffic for 2 hours around a busy parking structure until a concrete contractor could come out and reattach the pylon supporting the height warning pole you hit.
  • And you had to stay there the entire time and have people look at you while thinking, "What an idiot."

If I wasn't busy working in the office building next door when this happened, I would have been tempted to go say hello to the driver and share a story from my college years that would make them feel a little better. Because they aren't alone. This has happened before....
  • My story involves a band truck loaded with percussion equipment.
  • The truck got stuck under a railroad bridge, which caused the top of the truck to peel open like a sardine can.
  • A rescue crew was deployed, which freed the truck by letting the air out of the tires until it was safely below the level of the bridge, then pushing it out from underneath.
  • The driver of the truck, who I will politely not name, is still ridiculed at alumni events to this day and regaled with tales of the incident.
Have you ever had a day worse than one of these? If so, I'd love to hear about it, so leave your comments! You'll have my sympathy.

Life Lessons From A Salvage Yard

Lesson One: Necessity is the Mother of Invention
No air cleaner hose? No problem! Cut the bottom out of a sour cream container, and you can MacGyver your car into running like new!

Lesson Two: Avoid Sticky Situations
A soda can exploded inside this vehicle when it rolled over, and the straw stuck to the window! Messy, but great for a laugh.

Lesson Three: Things Aren't Always What They Seem
I initially thought these were bullet holes, but they didn't go all the way through the panel and out the other side. Turns out, this is what the Fire Department does to a vehicle to stabilize it before they pull it back over an embankment. Stick a fork in this one!

Lesson Four: Be Prepared!
You never know who you'll meet when you're traveling the highways and byways of life. So have chewing gum, deodorant, music, and antacid at the ready....

....and by all means, don't forget your spare toothbrush!

Lesson Five: Don't Drink and Drive!
No further explanation required.

Be safe out there everyone!

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time...

I love shiny things. In my universe, something can never be too covered with sequins, crystals, or bling of some kind. That includes gifts. So when I found this silver glitter wrapping paper, I figured I had scored!

That is, until I went to actually USE it. Then the real trouble began.

Because it's covered in glitter, tape won't stick to the wrapping. So I had to settle for this origami approach, then wait until I was tying the bow to get the package to stay shut. Crap!

And of course, it left little snow specks all over my table. And my hands. And my clothes. And because the table has grooves in the surface, it was a pain in the butt to clean up. Now I'm really irritated!

At least the finished product looks nice....and very SHINY! Of course, it's going to pop apart instantly and cover the recipient with fairy dust when opened. Hope they have a sense of humor.

And no, I'm not telling you who the gift is for. You'll just have to wait for the follow-up blog....

Before and After

So my new drivers license arrived in the mail today. Now that I look at the old and the new side by side, I'm surprised anyone let me into a bar, much less on a plane, for the past 5 years. If I was a bouncer, I would have arrested me for trying to pass a fake ID.

Here's the before....

And the after....

See what I mean?

Wardrobe Malfunction

Every trainer I know has a few good horror stories of classes gone wrong or crazy mishaps while they're facilitating a session. One friend of mine split his pants open bending down to point out something on a car to student and had to teach the rest of the class with his boxers in view!

All in all, I've been very lucky during my training career, with the exception of one crazy weather related incident in Sacramento a number of years ago. Not brave enough to share that one! Most of my mishaps have amounted to little more than walking around a body shop with a grease smudge on my face none of my students bothered to mention until I saw it in the bathroom during a lunch break.

Until this week! I was in our training center in Tempe, AZ doing a class on coaching skills for a group of my fellow trainers. It was close to the end of the module, and I was leading a discussion when out of nowhere, I felt a snap across the bridge of my right foot. I looked down to discover the top of my shoe coming apart! Without missing a beat, I tried to stay in the same place as much as possible to keep the shoe from flopping around since practically nothing was holding it on my foot.

While my students were taking a break, I found a MacGyver solution. Thank goodness for masking tape. Because the show must go on! So I just cycled the roll a couple of times and basically taped the shoe to my foot. And of course, posted it on Facebook!

Here's a close-up of the "carnage." I do love these, and I'm hoping my shoe doctor can repair it. Looks like a clean break...nothing a few stitches can't fix.

But in the meantime, I needed a dress code acceptable replacement for work the next day. Because of course my shoe would fail during the one trip that I packed NO OTHER SHOES besides flip flops. And those don't exactly meet our work dress code.

So it was off to dinner with some friends from class (wearing the flip flops), followed by a trip to Scottsdale's Fashion Square Mall, where I found these....

Hello, lover! Stuart Weitzman, 65% off. Macy's, I am forever in your debt. And note to self...be the shoe whore you are and bring at least 3 pairs on your next trip!

You've Got Mail

So I sent a Fathers Day card to a friend in Canada, and got notified yesterday that it was "Damaged due to inclement weather." Apparently that means it took a dip in Lake Michigan on the border crossing.....

I guess I should be happy it arrived.

At least my Frozen Fury tickets came today!

FYI, I have two extras since friends I planned to go with can't attend. If you're interested, send me a note, post a comment on my blog, or stalk me. Whatever! Lower level seats just off center ice....anyone tempted? There will be beer, hopefully a fight or two, and cute guys on skates. And did I mention it's in Las Vegas? How can you beat that?

Adventures in Moving: Part 6 (The Finale)

Well, it's been a long 10 days, but I think I'm finally done. Found some great furniture this weekend, just perfect for the size of the room. It was delivered Monday, and now the apartment is fully functional. I have a place to eat, blog, talk, watch TV, listen to music, relax, cook, entertain, and sleep. And it's a good thing, because I'm also out of decorating money!

The sofa-chair, by the way was meant to be. Not only is it comfy, it folds out into a single bed, in case someone might need to visit and stay a while! And the best part...the model is named Meghan! Nadine picked up on that little fact, and once she did, we stood there in the store, looked at each other, and knew it was a done deal.

So without further ado, the new space...finally complete!

My last stop today was Bed, Bath and Beyond, the best source for all the little stuff like throw pillows, kitchen gadgets...and a trash can. I wanted a nice stainless steel one, not one of those cheap plastic deals.

I always wondered why people included trash cans on their wedding gift registries, and now I know. These suckers are EXPENSIVE! I didn't even get the biggest, nicest one, and it still costs $129! Thank goodness for my 20% coupon, which brought the cost down to roughly a C-note. For that much money, this thing ought to make my coffee and wake me in the morning, and take out the trash all by itself! But it sure is pretty, and it's "fingerprint proof."

At least they soften the blow a little by including a package of special can liners with your purchase!

So now that my life is fully functional, this will be my last "Adventures in Moving" post. On to the more interesting business of living life...

Adventures in Moving: Part 4 (What Was I Thinking?)

I made excellent progress tonight unpacking the kitchen, so in honor of National Ice Cream Day I'm digging into pint of Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip and doing a little celebration dance while I blog. I have only two boxes left to unpack, and they may stay packed until I find a dining room set because they're just the right height for my laptop, given the only seat in the house right now besides the bed is an end table. And so far, I haven't caught myself saying, "Now I wonder where that thingy is...." which means the remaining boxes likely don't contain anything I desperately need.

In case you're wondering about the title for this blog, don't worry. I am not regretting my decision to move or anything of the sort. But in the process of unpacking, I realized the pre-move "junk purge" missed some things. I thought it would be entertaining to look at a few items that probably should have hit the junk bin, but that came along for the ride anyway.

This is a board game I've never unwrapped. I think I had a bachelorette party or some gag gift occasion in mind and thought this would be the perfect thing and I'd never find it again. Apparently I rethought my choice, because I still have the darn thing, Single ladies? Any takers?

These were intended to be birthday gifts for my nephews following my trip to Ireland. I was there in December of 2006. Uh, hello...that was 3 years ago! I really pulled a Mom on this one, and stored these away in the top of my closet, where I promptly forgot about them (a trick my Mom always managed to pull off annually when we were kids). The moment to give these without a long-winded explanation has passed now, plus the jersey won't fit the intended nephew any more. Anyone?

The banana stands are testament to the hazards of keeping half your life in boxes for 5 years. I knew I had a banana stand...somewhere. When I went looking for it and couldn't find it, I thought I was deluded and only imagined I owned one, so I promptly bought another. Now, I like bananas, but I sure don't need 2 ways to hang 'em. The black wrought iron one stays. The other just hit the trash.

You're probably thinking to yourself, "That is the UGLIEST plate I have ever seen! Who in the world would want that?" I kept this a proof I am NOT an artist! Everyone who sees my scrapbooks seems to think I have this hidden artistic talent, but this specimen is proof to the contrary. The plate was my first attempt at painting pottery. We went to one of those "Color Me Mine" places for Molly's birthday a few years ago. It was fun as a group outing, but the final product wasn't exactly what I had in mind. So much for my career as a painter....

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. "Exactly how drunk was she when she bought this?" I can confirm alcohol, as well as peer pressure from my co-workers, was involved. I got this at the Saddle Ranch Restaurant at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Dinner out was our summer fun event back when I was a claims manager, and all my employees were pushing to get me on the mechanical bull. Buying and wearing this thing was the only way I could get out of the bull ride. Of course, the funniest part of the night was leaving, running into Keanu Reeves (yes, THAT Keanu Reeves) in the parking garage elevator (still wearing the hat, of course), and getting so flustered it took me 20 minutes to find my car.

With a story like that, the hat will be with me for a while.

Mayercraft Carrier Day 1 - Door Decorating!

The Carnival Cruise Line is known as the "fun ships" cruise line, so pair the Mayercraft with Carnival and you've got double the fun!

One of the cool things the Sixthman crew did last year was a door decorating contest, and the tradition continues this year. No word on who the official winner is yet, but here's a quick look at some of our more favorite entries from the Veranda Deck, where our room is located.

This one does a great job of focusing on the "Even Craftier" Mayercraft theme.

As you can see in this one, John's "mankini" last year made quite the impression....

But I must say, this one was by far our favorite....

Ole!!! We're off to Mexico!

Things That Make You Go HMMMM...

A ride along is always more fun when I run across something that makes me laugh. By that standard, today was a banner day. Thanks to the boys at Maximum Collision for their hospitality AND sense of humor.

I was REALLY tempted to try one of these, but sadly didn't have change....and maybe that's a good thing. I think I'm hyper enough most of the time.

I wonder if Starbucks knows about this...
